Award-Winning Author, Suburban Homesteader, Licensed N.C. Guide and Aspiring Market Gardener

Welcome to the official website of ACWC award-winning author John B. Marek.

Here you will find information about my writing, my hand-tied fishing tackle and my adventures (misadventures?) in suburban homesteading, as well as excerpts, a chance to win a Kindle Fire 7 and a special offer on my new book, Ben and the Art of Lawnmower Maintenance. Email me for free signed postcards (they make good bookmarks and fair kindling) and check out my weekly FIELD NOTES column, which explores subjects ranging from favorite books and movies to lasagna gardening and pocket water fishing techniques.

On July 11th, I had the pleasure of speaking about Square Foot Gardening and signing copies of Ben and the Art of Lawnmower Maintenance at the Hampton B. Allen Library in Wadesboro, North Carolina.

Had a great time being part of Hampton B. Allen Library's Summer Speaker Series. Talked a little about Square Foot Gardening and little about my latest book, Ben and the Art of Lawnmower Maintenance

My next event will be a book reading and signing for Ben and the Art of Lawnmower Maintenance at the Brown Bag Book Club in Wadesboro, North Carolina on Monday, September 17th. The time is noon until 1:00 p.m.

Check out the EVENTS page for future engagements. If you would like to have me speak at a function you are involved in, such as a garden club, book club, public library event, convention, bookstore reading, or retail event, I would love to accommodate you. I’ll bring giveaways, prizes and my Allegedly Famous Bourbon Brownies.

The term FIELD NOTES comes from my short story "The Bug Jar." It is what Jonah writes on the cover of the spiral notebook where he records the activities of his "test subjects." Quite unknown to me at the time I wrote that story, there is also a company in Chicago called FIELD NOTES which produces a very cool line of stationary products based on vintage agricultural advertising notepads... literally "field" notes. I now use that company's books, pencils and pens for my daily note-taking and can personally recommend their products.
