Here you will find information about my writing, my hand-tied fishing tackle and my adventures (misadventures?) in suburban homesteading, as well as excerpts, contests and an excerpt from my new book, Ben and the Art of Lawnmower Maintenance. Email me for free signed postcards (they make good bookmarks and fair kindling) and check out my weekly FIELD NOTES column, which explores subjects ranging from favorite books and movies to lasagna gardening and pocket water fishing techniques.
What a fun evening in Uptown Wadesboro, speaking to a packed house of gardening enthusiasts about Square Foot Gardening and sharing a little bit of my personal history in the garden. Originally opened in 1895, H.W. Little is Anson County's oldest retail business and I was greeted by a great, engaged crowd ranging in age from 2 to 82. It was particularly exciting to see a mother and her two young daughters taking copious notes; maybe starting down the road to family homesteading! I hope to return in a few months to sign copies of my forthcoming book, Ben and the Art of Lawnmower Maintenance.
Check out the EVENTS page for future engagements. If you would like to have me speak at a function you are involved in, such as a garden club, book club, public library event, convention, bookstore reading, or retail event, I would love to accommodate you. I’ll bring giveaways, prizes and maybe even cookies.
The term FIELD NOTES comes from my short story "The Bug Jar." It is what Jonah writes on the cover of the spiral notebook where he records the activities of his "test subjects." Quite unknown to me at the time I wrote that story, there is also a company in Chicago called FIELD NOTES which produces a very cool line of stationary products based on vintage agricultural advertising notepads... literally "field" notes. I now use that company's books, pencils and pens for my daily note-taking and can personally recommend their products.
Wynfield Creek Homestead is a private residence. I am happy to show visitors around my suburban homestead, but by appointment only, please.
